There's been a big and sudden change to the forecast for the Twin Cities metro area Wednesday afternoon. High winds, snow and sleet are on tap Wednesday through Friday for the Twin Cities. What started as a Winter Weather Advisory has been upgraded by the National Weather Service.
The snow south of the Metro area from Medford to Faribault has snarled traffic on I-35. Drivers being asked to avoid that stretch as the snow has caused so many crashes that cars are at a standstill.

— MnDOT District 6 (@mndotsoutheast) April 10, 2019WCCO Meteorologist Paul Douglas says, "It's still going to be a sleet sandwich. It's going to start as snow, the worst of it this evening and tonight. We should wake up to 3-5 inches. Rush hour tomorrow will be a mess. Then it changes to freezing rain and ice pellets tomorrow. So not much more accumulation during the day tomorrow. But it's going to be windy and foul. Then it ends as a little more snow, maybe another 1-3 Thursday night. Still going to be a mess but the Twin Cities getting off easy compared to Western Minnesota."
It's part of a large system extending from the Rockies to the Great Lakes.
