The majority of customers at the Diamond Lake Ace Hardware store near the intersection of Nicollet Ave. and Diamond Lake Rd. were there for one item, salt. In addition, it’s becoming hot commodity.

“I was all over Menards they had nothing left,” said John a customer at the store. “I’m buying a lot. I need the pet friendly stuff for my dog and the other stuff for my sidewalks.”

The late winter is great news for business at the Diamond Lake store in South Minneapolis. They were seeing slow sales in shovels and other winter items, but not now.

“We were selling out of salt, we had to order different brands just to keep up with the demand,” said Mike Meyer, who helps manage the store. “We’ve done 20 pallets of salt and grit.”

For people curious about “grit” is crushed granite and serves as better alternative to sand for traction according to Meyer.

“We have broken records in salt and grit sales, it’s really is incredible,” said Meyer. “We’ve had a lot of people coming in and surprisingly everyone’s been in good spirits.”

With two rounds of snowfall, people need to keep up those good spirits.
