Minnesota's bike lanes and paths are busy Wednesday morning as students at nearly 200 different schools pedal to and from class for National Bike to School Day.
The event is part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program, overseen by Dave Cowan, who says the say is not just about getting kids outside and moving, but also a reminder to make roads safer for non-vehicle transportation for people of all ages.
"The Safe Routes to School program does focus on creating safe places for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel whether that's sidewalks, bike lanes, trails," he said.
National Bike To School Day is also a good reminder for motorists to be patient and aware of their surroundings every day.
Fifty-six schools across the metro are registered to participate.
