Former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire retires for health reasons

Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire is calling it a career.

The 62-year-old informed the Tigers Saturday afternoon that he will retire from baseball effective immediately.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Gardenhire has been dealing with complications related to food poisoning he experienced earlier this season while in Minneapolis. Since then, he's dealt with tremors in his hand.

Gardenhire, a cancer survivor, spent 13 seasons with the Minnesota Twins and a total of 27 years in the Twins organization. He was in the third year of his three-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Lloyd McClendon will manage the team the remainder of the season.
