University of Minnesota president Joan Gabel is expected to ask the board of regents on Monday to delay students moving into dorms on several campuses for at least two weeks because of coronavirus concerns.
The Regents have a special meeting on Monday, and Gabel is also expected to call for online learning for undergradute classes for the first two weeks of the fall semester.
The moves would affect undergraduate students at campuses in the Twin Cities, Duluth, and Rochester.
In a letter to students, Gabel said their plans must continue to adapt, and that the U's mission means little if students and staff are placed in high-risk situations.
The fall schedule at University of Minnesota campuses at Crookston and Morris would not change because those communities have lower numbers of COVID-19 cases.
Right now, first-year and transfer students at UMD are scheduled to move into dorms next week.
Move-in day at the Twin Cities campus is Aug. 30.
If the regents approve Gabel's request, University adminstrators will determine how to move forward by monitoring changes in state and federal guidelines, the availability of rapid testing, and the number of new cases among college-aged adults.
