Shoppers in Minneapolis will start paying a 5-cent fee for a carryout bag at retailers beginning Jan. 1.
It's the start of the city's "bring your own bag" ordinance aimed at reducing waste in the city and encourages shoppers to bring their own bags.
There are some exceptions to the rule, according to the
City of Minneapolis website.
- Bags used for produce, bulk foods, small items, carryout restaurants, farmers markets, food banks, and retail establishments that do not possess a cash register
- Secondhand bags, bags sold in packages, dry cleaning bags, bags given out with no transaction
- Bags given at hospitals, car dealerships and car washes
- Bags used for litter cleanup.
The city plans to work with retailers for the first six months of the ordinance to educate them and not fine them for not complying.
If you don't bring a bag, plan to pay the 5-cent fee.
