The shooting comes during a continued spike of violence in the city.
"We've seen a concerning increase in gun violence," said Saint Paul Police public information officer Steve Linders. "It's just something we're dealing with and something we're trying to get ahead of.
The death marks the city's 23rd homicide of the year, a number that's up by five compared to the same point in 2019. Reports of shots fired in St. Paul are 130 percent in the last year and 144 people have been shot compared to 86 at this time one year ago.
"We're doing everything we can to get in front of it," Linders said. "We're reaching out to the community and working with our partners. We are going to keep doing that and we are going to investigate these with everything we have."
According to Linders, 20 of the 23 homicides have been solved.
"We take this personally," Linders said. "We're not the police department, we are the community's police department. We are a part of this community. A lot of our officers live in the city and grew up here. Many of us have family in the city. It's really frustrating to see this level of violence."
Saint Paul Police had not had any calls for service to the residence where the woman was found.
In total, Saint Paul Police investigated three shootings in three hours overnight. One woman is in grave condition and a man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
