Two people were wounded Sunday night in a shooting in St. Paul's midway neighbhorhood, not far from where nearly 20,000 people jammed Allianz Field for a soccer playoff game.

"We've seen too much of this, and it's time for it to stop," said St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, whose city has been marked by a large number of gunfire incidents this year.

There have been 24 reported homcides in Minnesota's capital city this year, nine of them happening in the month of September.

"It's time for us to do something fundamentally different in St. Paul, and I'm committed to doing the work," Carter said. "Every single one of us has a role in insuring that our city is safe."

Police say two groups of people passing each other near a laundromat at University and Pascal exchanged gunfire, and they have one person in custody.

The shooting victims are expected to survive, one of them suffering gunshot wounds to the torso, while the other was hit in the arm and grazed on the head.

Police say a handgun was recovered at the scene.

Carter said he will call a meeting of his city cabinet as soon as possible to address the gun violence issue.
