Senior U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) is unveiling her plan for a major healthcare overhaul in Minnesota amid her bid for the governorship.
Her strategy focuses on sweeping healthcare reforms, a proposal to expand medical training pipelines and lowers soaring insurance premiums across the state.
"I am reflecting where Minnesotans are right now," Klobuchar said Friday. "They want costs to go down. They want to have a government that works and that they can believe in and trust again."
Klobuchar's campaign shared a three point plan for health care, which includes lowering health care costs by bringing down premiums, protecting access to care by strengthening rural health care, safety-net hospitals and clinics, and health systems, and supporting more medical innovation and the health care workforce.
Klobuchar’s plan also focuses on workforce expansion and state-managed cost controls.
"I am focused on making sure that Minnesotans can afford their healthcare, that they can fill their prescriptions," she says.
In a statement from her campaign spokesperson GOP opponent Lisa Demuth pushed back against Klobuchar‘s plan arguing that "the senator’s long career in Washington has only fueled high costs for Minnesotans," and that leadership change is overdue.
"As House Speaker, Lisa Demuth continued Minnesota’s nation-leading reinsurance plan, which was put in place initially because of the failures of Amy Klobuchar and other Washington politicians in D.C. As governor, Lisa will increase competition and plan choices for Minnesota, continue the great bipartisan work that was done last session to support our rural hospitals, and continue to root out fraud in our state programs that drives up costs for taxpayers," the statement reads.
Sen. Klobuchar had this to say in response:
"I led the bill on prescription drug negotiations. That was me, and it's something the Trump administration is using right now in their work to try to bring down drug costs," Klobuchar adds.
With the November general election approaching, both candidates will now have to convince voters which vision for fixing the state's health care system is the right one.
