The boy's hockey team from Waseca High School will wear their special jerseys honoring a wounded police officer only in warm-ups after the Minnesota State High School League ruled the sweaters do not comply with its policy for Special Recognitions, Commemorative or Memorial Patches.

The team members posted on Twitter that they will continue to support law enforcement and Officer Arik Matson, who remains hospitalized after he was shot in the head earlier this month.

In a statement on Facebook, the MSHSL say it has been working with Wadena school administrators all week in identifying ways in which appropriate recognition can be demonstrated.

The league said that includes following uniform rules and policies.

The jerseys are dark blue with the words "Waseca Police" on the front, with the last name "Matson" on the back above the player's number.

Matson's badge number 222 is also on the jersey front.

After the season, the Bluejays boy's and girl's hockey teams plan to auction off the Matson jerseys with the proceeds going to the officer's family.

Officer Matson was wounded on Jan. 6 while trying to apprehend a suspect.

According to a Caring Bridge post, Matson is showing signs of improvement.

Some have gone on social media to criticize the high school league's decision, while the team's coach and players have been low-key about it.

We have been notified by the MSHSL that these uniforms do not meet their policy for Special Recognitions, Commemorative or Memorial Patches. Waseca Boys/Girls will not be allowed to wear them for games. However we will continue to support Law Enforcement & Officer Matson.

Here is the MSHSL's policy.

Minnesota high school hockey teams in recent years have donned special warm-up jerseys that included sponsorships, then switched to regulation uniforms for games.

The Edina-based company that designed and donated the jerseys, Gemini Athletic, plan to sell them online, with the money raised going to Matson's family.

GoFundMe page for Matson has raised about $200,000.

Waseca won Thursday night's game, beating Luverne 4-2.
