A Waseca police officer is gravely injured after a shooting Monday night.

Officers found Jonovsky in a neighboring property on the next block.

"At one point during the encounter with him, Officer Matson was shot," Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintedent Drew Evans said, adding the incident happened quickly. "Officers then shot Mr. Jonovski. Officers attended to both parties at the scene."

Matson was transported by air ambulance to North Memorial. Waseca Police Chief Penny Vought contacted his immediate family and made arrangements for his wife and son to travel to him.

"We have to remain strong and diligent," Vought said of how the department responds to a traumatic event. "We still have a job to do. We're still going to be responding to calls in the city of Waseca, be responsive. But help one another, too."

"This is the worst nightmare a law enforcement agency can face and we're living it right now."

Both men remain hospitalized. Waseca officers do not have body-worn cameras. Investigators are working to determine if dash cam video captured any of the incident.

Since it's an officer-involved shooting, the BCA is heading the investigation. The crime scene is still active and not every officer or witness has been interviewed yet, so authorities could provide limited information.

A GoFundMe for Matson has already surpassed its $20,000 goal.
