The Minneapolis Park Board has taken another step in removing the name of a controversial historical figure from signs in and around a popular city lake.
Lake Calhoun's name was changed by the board last year back to its original Dakota name, Bde Maka Ska, and while there is a legal challenge to the way that process was carried out, there is no doubt that changing the names of parks, parkways and roads in and around the lake fit squarely within the board's responsibilities.
Wednesday night, they voted to remove the Calhoun name from all of them.
The board is now accepting public comments on the street name changes until the first of next month. A public hearing regarding the street name changes will be held August 7th.
