Minnesota Senate Republicans are proposing a quarter-percentage income tax cut for middle-class Minnesotans in their tax bill outlined Wednesday.
The bill includes $800 million in tax cuts and sets up some tough negotiations with Democrats considering lawmakers will adjourn in less than a month.
Senate Taxes Committee Chair Roger Chamberlain says he's optimistic.
"The leaders will work on it, the caucus will work on it," he said. "We're hopeful we're going to come to a positive conclusion by the end of the session. That is our goal, that is our hope. Pray a lot for the Majority Leader (Paul Gazelka) in his efforts in the caucus."
Chamberlain says the bill will also help more parents with more education costs, and help small businesses grow. The Democrats' proposal would increase taxes to do things like lower the cost of health care and improve the state's roads and bridges. The session is slated to end May 20.
