St. Paul police have issued an alert after they say five people overdosed on suspected heroin in the past 24 hours.

Police say five people received medical attention and survived.

It happened in four locations Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

"It's a disturbing trend," said police spokesperson Sgt Mike Ernster. "The (herion) could be laced with Fentanyl, something that would make it extra potent."

Ernster said someone using the drug may have a reaction that they would not expect, and it may be fatal.

"We have seen the spike in incidents in the past 24 hours," said Ernster. "Obviously we had something in South St Paul this past weekend, and I know Hennepin County has seen a jump in overdoses as well."

Ernster was referring to an incident in which six people were found  sprawled on a lawn, unconscious and not breathing in South St. Paul on Saturday night. Medics on the scene used life saving measures on the victims, including overdose reverser Narcan. All six survived and were treated at local hospitals.
