With postseason baseball back at Target Field for the first time in nine years, the 2019 American League Central Division Champion Minnesota Twins have a new "Homer Hanky" to celebrate. It's red this time around and reads "Welcome to BOMBA SZN" refering to the teams 307 home runs this season, the most ever in baseball history.
The hanky will be given out to each fan as they enter Target Field for every Twins home game of the American League Division series. They also went on sale Thursday at the Majestic Twins Clubhouse Store, at all CUB locations and online at Star Tribune.
There was a long line of fans waiting at Target Field when the hankies arrived and they were only able to buy ten per person, "I have friends that have theirs framed from the 1987 World Series and I wasn't here then, and didn't get one so I wanted to make sure I got my ten," said Deb Norris, from Plymouth.
She plans to give the hankies away as gifts. "Everybody's so happy, and we love our Twins," she said.
The hanky this year is sort of like a towel, and it's red because Major League Baseball no longer allows for white rally towels. "They decided it was distracting to players at the plate and in the field so we can no longer have white hankies," said Matt Hodson, Communications manager for the Twins.
And with baseball all about statistics, Hodson went on to explain that the team is 19 and 8 when they wear their red jerseys at home. Even the new blue jerseys with the red lettering seems to be helping in the win column, "We're something like 22 and 13 when we wear those jerseys," he said.
He said there will be about 50 to 60 thousand hankies for sale, with plans to make more if need be.
