A blockbuster of a surprise for Minnesota soccer fans. Minnesota United introducing 34-year old global soccer superstar James Rodríguez at an Allianz Field press conference on Friday, a coup for local soccer.

To the casual fan, he's right up there with Lionel Messi, who also came over to the MLS joining Miami in 2023.

Rodriguez will wear number 10 to mark the team's 10th anniversary.

So why Minnesota?

"It's the club, they were able to have more advanced talks with him, it's the club that wanted him, and if it's the club that wants him, he wants to also be a part of that," Rodroguez said through a translator.

Rodriguez is captain of the Colombian national team and will be headed to the 2026 World Cup in June.

"He's just looking forward to being on the field and joining the team and the roster and contribute and be part of the squad," Rodriquez added through the translator.

Terms of his deal have not been released but he's signed to a guaranteed contract through June with a club option through December.

Local fans will have the chance to welcome Rodriguez at the Loons home opener Saturday, February 28 at Allianz Field in St. Paul.

“James is a player whose quality, vision, and experience at the highest levels of the game are unquestioned. We’re excited to add his creativity and football intelligence to our group. At the same time, this move is about collective strength — not about putting everything on one individual,” said MNUFC Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Khaled El-Ahmad. “We believe that within our structure, culture, James can add an important dimension to the team. Our focus is on integrating him the right way and ensuring he contributes in a way that elevates the group. We’re confident that, together, we can create something impactful for our community, club and our fans.”

To celebrate his arrival, the team is offering a 10-hour flash sale on tickets.
