Twins shortstop Royce Lewis will once again have reconstructive ACL surgery on his right knee, but his manager says the prospect remains upbeat about his future.
"He's handling it as well as I think any young person can handle something like this, or anyone at all," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said on Friday.
"He is a very upbeat and positive individual," said Baldelli. "I know he's going to do everything in his power to handle it that way again."
Lewis first injured his right knee early in the 2021 season, and the surgery and rehab wiped out the rest of his campaign.
That came after Lewis did not play in 2020 when the COVID pandemic wiped out the entire schedule for MLB-affiliated minor league baseball.
Lewis is set to have the procedure later this month and need a full year to recover.
He was hurt in the game on May 29 in a third-inning collision with the wall while making a tough catch.
That was his first major league appearance in center field.
Lewis was the first overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft.
He made his major league debut earlier this season on May 6, taking the place of injured Twins shortstop Carlos Correa.
In 12 games with the Twins, Lewis batted .300 with 12 hits in 40 at-bats, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Lewis also hit two home runs for the Twins, one of them a grand slam.
