How likely is it that Tiger Woods returns to golf?

A Twin Cities orthopedic specialist thinks Tiger Woods will be able to play golf again, but at what level remains unclear after a car accident this week.

Woods crashed his SUV in Los Angeles Tuesday, shattering the tibia and fibula bones of his lower right leg in multiple locations. Those injuries were stabilized with a rod in the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones in the foot and ankle required screws and pins.

Mathew Hofkens is a sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist at TRIA Orthopedics.

"What people really want to know is he going to golf, and golf at the highest (level)," Hofkens said. "Those are different scenarios than golfing, playing with your kids, and doing standard everyday life things. Those are extremely likely."

Hofkens says he's seen this kind of injury before, and it takes months and months to recover.
