Could Gobert’s suspension and McDaniels’ injury create a moment for Anthony Edwards?

With Rudy Gobert poised to serve his one-game suspension and Jaden McDaniels out with an injury for the Timberwolves’ Tuesday night play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers, team insiders expect this to be a chance for another Wolf to shine.

Timberwolves beat reporter Chris Hine, from the Minneapolis Star Tribune, joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Henry Lake to discuss why he thinks the team’s current situation is a perfect opportunity for Anthony Edwards to make a big step.

Hine shared that while the mid-game fight between Gobert and teammate Kyle Anderson may have been more than it seemed, he thinks the suspension Gobert will serve on Tuesday night was the right call.

As for McDaniels, Hine shared that the Wolves’ young star is expected to be out the entire postseason, and he doesn’t expect the team’s chances of making a deep playoff push to be better because of it.

“It almost seems no matter who comes in or who goes out. There always seems to be something going on,” Hine said about what happened during and after Sunday’s regular-season finale and the Timberwolves franchise.

However, one thing that the current situation could do is set the stage for Edwards to make a jump that many around the league believe he is capable of making.

“This is all on the table tomorrow night for [Edwards],” Hines said. “National TV audience against these guys, against the Lakers. The offense should, maybe be more fluid without Gobert on the floor. Maybe driving lanes are a little more open for him.”

Hines says that if the Wolves win on Tuesday, it’s going to be because they outscored the Lakers and to outscore the Lakers means that Edwards helped lead the offense and had a “very good game.”
