Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has a few ideas up his sleeve when it comes to a new arena for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx.

The NBA Board of Governors expected to approve the sale of the team to Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore in the coming weeks, a new facility is the likely next step.

Despite a 2017 renovation, Target Center is one of the oldest and smallest arenas in the NBA with design limitations that don't fit the modern day pro basketball experience.

Frey says while the city won't help with arena financing, he tells WCCO's Chad Hartman there are a few ideal locations for it.

"Well, I won't get into specifics. I do think that there's a number of really great options and, you know, the closer that we can have it right into that downtown core, or the Warehouse District generally, I think there is a massive opportunity to really recreate a full-on entertainment district," Frey says.

Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore have said they do plan to keep the team in Minneapolis once they take over majority ownership. But Frey notes they will need to find their own financing for a new arena.

"Obviously we would want to work with the new ownership, ownership structure, and the  Timberwolves to make sure we can get something that is is truly successful for them and of course for the city as well," Mayor Frey explained. "But if the question is, are we gonna publicly subsidize an arena itself? The answer is no."
