Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara described the scene as a warzone on Monday morning when telling reporters about a shooting Sunday night that left one woman dead and five others injured at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis.
"It's more akin to a warzone, the amount of shell casings that officers are recovering here than something you'd find in a park," O'Hara said. "It's sickening and we need people to come forward to provide additional information."
Minneapolis police responded to the shooting at 9:30 p.m. at Boom Island Park where O'Hara said about 100 people were still at the scene when officers arrived.
Five of the six shooting victims were men, with one of those men suffering life-threatening injuries. One woman was knocked unconscious during the chaos.
"It does appear there was a large gathering at the park, possible a barbeque or something else," added O'Hara. "An altercation then erupted into gunfire."
No arrests had been made as of Monday morning, with O'Hara saying there was likely more than one shooter based on the hundreds of pieces of evidence that investigators were combing through.
"It's obvious a whole lot of rounds were fired here. I don't know what could motivate people to come armed to a gathering like this in the way that they did."
