A 4-year old girl is dead after a tree fell on the tent she was in during the overnight storms Friday morning. The girl was Natalia Ashes, of Yankton, South Dakota, according to the Mankato Free Press.

It happened during in Land of Memories Park in Mankato.

The girl was camping in a tent with her family at the park which is along the Minnesota River. She had been with her family for an annual Mahkato Wacipi, or powwow. The Native American gathering is scheduled to take place Friday through Sunday.

Police received a call around 2:30a.m. She was taken to the Mayo Clinic Health System hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Nobody else in the family was injured but another tent was also struck by a branch.  The occupant was treated for minor injuries.

Parts of Central and Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin saw very high winds with the storms in the early hours of Friday.  There were several reports of trees down and wind damage across the region.

Storms were less severe around the Mankato area but strong enough to cause the tree damage that lead to the girl’s death.
