According to authorities, a vehicle parked at a rest area in southeastern Minnesota was found in the sweltering heat with 47 cats inside.
The cats were rescued on Tuesday and were reportedly living with their owner in the car, as the owner recently became homeless.
Animal Humane Society investigator Ahsley Pudas shared the news and that the owner had not wanted to abandon the cats after losing their residence.
The owner reached out to the humane society asking for help after living with them for “some time,” Pudas shared. She also added that the cats were not left alone in the car.
“Unfortunately, with the heat yesterday, he recognized that it was above and beyond what he was capable of at this time. And he let us help them out,” Pudas told the Associated Press.
Despite the heat and unsanitary conditions of the vehicle, the Animal Humane Society reported that most of the cats had only minor medical issues, and their ages ranged from less than a year to more than 12 years old.
Temperatures in Harris had reached over 90 degrees on Tuesday when the Animal Humane Society was notified.
The Animal Humane Society shared that the cats will be sterilized and eventually made available for adoption.
