Saturday's annual Spring Flood Run is expected to draw thousands of motorcyclists as riders travel along the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers.
Despite the riding season getting off to a rather slow start due to weather conditions, the Minnesota Minnesota Department of Public Safety Motorcycle Safety Center is reminding riders and motorists to use caution.
"Motorists and motorcyclists alike need to be aware of their surroundings getting back into it," said Jay Bock, the motorcycle safety coordinator with the Department of Public Safety. "It's been awhile since we've been on the road. Riders should refresh themselves with their motorcycle, the controls, and their skillsets."
82 riders were killed last year in Minnesota, marking the state's deadliest year for motorcyclists.
Bock says he's not seeing anything new when it comes to the dangers on the road, it's just more of what's plagued riders for a long time.
"As it relates to distracted driving, we talk about that a lot as it relates other motorists, but I want to emphasize that the motorcyclist shouldn't drive distracted. That just compounds the problem. Obviously don't drink and drive and if you wear your safety gear, should something happen, you'll have the best protection afforded you."
Speed is another area of concern.
"Ride at the limit," Bock added. "Ride your ride. I know we're talking about the Flood Run, the best advice for those participants is don't feel like you need to keep up with someone if it's not at your comfort level."
When it comes to the high number of fatalities last year, Bock says man were riders in the middle-age bracket ranging from 40 to 50-year-olds.
He says that goes to show many people are returning to the sport, but unfortunately it can come at a dangerous price.
"You reach a certain point in life and you want to get back into it, maybe you did it as a kid. I'm one of those people," Bock said. "If it's been awhile, getting one of those refresher courses makes a big difference. Being comfortable on motorcycle is big. Being comfortable when you're riding with others in one of these big rides is a huge advantage for you."
