In media accounts, people from different generations—the Gen Z’ers, Millennials, Gen X’ers, Baby Boomers, and those of the Silent Generation—often seem at odds and in conflict.

That’s why a discussion that brings them all together to talk about money is especially necessary.

On Sept. 20, people from every generation in the community are invited to join a “Decades Discussion: Your Financial Future,” sponsored by AARP Minnesota and Pollen.

Registration is required, but the event is free to all and does not require an AARP membership, only the ability to join an online event on Zoom.

The online discussion will create a frank intergenerational conversation about money, financial security, and wealth disparities.

“We expect participants ranging in age from their 20s to their 90s. Anyone who wants to learn and connect is welcome to join us,” said Erin Parrish, AARP Minnesota associate director of Advocacy and Outreach.

AARP offers data and information about making financial plans, but the discussion is meant to provide personal stories and connections that will provide real-life context for decisions.

“In these conversations, participants will hear the lived experiences shared by people from other generations, how they think about their finances and savings,” Parish said. “This offers a chance for people from different generations to have a frank discussion.”

The conversations will also highlight how lifelong racial and gender disparities frequently impact savings and planning for retirement.

“We hope to come away with a better understanding of how wealth disparities affect our communities and the programs like Social Security that we all will rely on,” Parish added. “People do their best, but there are a lot of barriers to saving. We find that people are willing to open up and share their experiences so that others can learn from what they’ve done.”

The discussion will be moderated by author, Emmy award-winning broadcaster, and WCCO Radio host Sheletta Brundidge.

The event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. To register, visit aarp.org/mn.
