A 14-year-old girl from Alexandria has a shot at winning NBC reality singing competition "The Voice."
"You never know what's going to happen if you don't try," Brooklyn Marie Ostlund told Vineeta Sawkar on the WCCO Morning News Thursday.
The young singer-songwriter began performing at the age of 3 in her hometown, picked up a guitar at 7 and started professionally gigging at age 11. Now, she's working on an album.
Ostlund got two chair turns during her Blind Audition and joined Kelly Clarkson's team. The singer says she was hoping to be on Team Kelly, with the star's track record as the first winner of "American Idol" and as someone who's helped craft other young artists' careers.
"I know that making it in the music industry is often really hard, and I feel like most people don't get the chance to do that, so hopefully this whole competition show thing gives me a jumpstart, and I'm able to start doing that for a living," Ostlund said.
On Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, she'll be singing the national anthem for the Vikings-Colts noon game. Ostlund said lots of practice has helped her prepare.
On Monday, the next episode of "The Voice" with Ostlund airs, and the Battle Rounds are underway.
Should she win the show, Ostlund would be the youngest-ever victor. A 15-year-old won back in 2018.
