In a long-expected announcement, Minnesota Second District Congresswoman Angie Craig on Tuesday announced she is running for the US Senate seat being vacated by Tina Smith.
Craig posted a video to social media to make it official.
"We're proud Minnesotans, a state of fierce independence, freedom, and community, people willing to take on the powerful and fight for what's right, it's why I'm running for US Senate. To listen, to fight for all of Minnesota, and to win," said Craig in the video, which shows her traveling across the state in her black Jeep to meet with voters.
In the video, the Democrat criticizes the Trump administration and touts her own successes, including winning what was considered a GOP district four straight times.
Other Democrats who've announced plans to run for Smith's seat include Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and former state Senator Melissa Lopez Franzen.
Republicans who have committed are former Navy Seal Adam Schwartze and community activist Royce White.
On mid-February, Smith announced she would not seek re-election in next year's balloting.
Smith was appointed to the seat by Gov. Dayton in 2017 after Al Franken resigned, and won the special election the following November.
She won her own term in 2020.
