Those church basement staples are heading for a good cause. An upcoming Minnesota "Star Bar" bake sale aims to support struggling local restaurants.

Community members and local celebrities, like Andrew Zimmern and Zoe François, are teaming up to sell homemade dessert bars at Gray’s Food Hall to benefit the Salt Cure Restaurant Recovery Fund.

"You know, people can donate online, of course, and we encourage people to do that," explains Director of operations Molly Herman. "But we wanted a way to bring people, you know, together and integrate, and have that community aspect to it."

She says the grassroots event allows the public to purchase treats from over 40 bakers, with all proceeds funding grants for statewide businesses struggling in the wake of Operation Metro Surge, the federal government's immigration crackdown in the state.

"We wanted this to be a community effort to assist restaurants," Herman adds. "We didn't want to put a burden on the restaurants to help us put this on. So over 40 home bakers signed up. They're all bringing like three-dozen bars. Folks from the general public can go online and purchase tickets. Each ticket purchases a bar."

The community-led "bake sale" and is set to run from Noon-2:00 p.m. this Saturday, March 21. You can purchase tickets here. Then you head to Graze Food Hall by Travail in Minneapolis' North Loop Saturday to pick up your bars.
