President Joe Biden and Donald Trump appear to be on their way to winning their party's presidential primary in Minnesota according to the latest results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office.

For the Democrats, Biden picked up just over 70 percent of the vote with 171,299 votes while 45,942 Minnesotans voted "uncommitted".

President Biden won 64 of the 75 delegates that were at stake in the DFL presidential primary. Uncommitted won 11 delegates.

Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips, who vowed on X in November to endorse Biden or the likely nominee if his own campaign was no longer viable, captured 18,994 voted (7.76%).

"Republicans had about 330,000 voters while Democrats had about 244,000 in Minnesota," said WCCO Radio political analyst Blois Olson on the WCCO Morning News. "Very low turnout. That shows the lack of energy in this race."

Former president Donald Trump meanwhile led the pack for Republicans despite an effort from challenger and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who campaigned in the Twin Cities at the end of February.

Trump's final tally, according to the SOS website, was 232,919 votes or 69 percent compared to Haley, who finished with 97,227 votes (28.77%).

Haley's expected to suspend her campaign on Wednesday, according to CBS News.

"I think [Haley] has a broader national appeal," Olson said. "I think there will not just a sense that she's going to linger and see what happens to Trump's legal woes, but that if there is a lane for a third party, she's going to fill that lane."

Minnesota joined 16 states in holding a primary on Tuesday.
