The debate over whether to ban cell phone's in schools continues.
A new bill introduced by legislators seeks to outlaw phones and smart watches in kindergarten through 8th grade, while restricting use in high schools during classroom hours.
State Senator Alice Mann (DFL- Edina) spoke about the bill on the Adam and Jordana show Tuesday.
"We did not say in there at all, that you have to do it a certain way," Mann explained. "So we left it completely up to each district to do it, however it works for them. But we are just playing a supporting role and saying, 'yeah, let's do this for every school', so every kid has the opportunity to have the best learning environment."
Mann says right now, the biggest pushback they're facing is coming from parents. She also talked about how disruptive phone use in the classroom can be.
Cell phones are not going away," Mann said. "However, we have created an environment where kids cannot learn what they need to learn, their reading, their math, their social studies, because phones are going off in the classroom all day long. And they're scrolling through social media or watching videos instead of paying attention to class."
Per a law passed last year, all schools must execute their own policies by March 15 of this year.
