Duluth and surrounding areas are dealing with a blizzard that arrived early Wednesday morning as part of the slow and powerful storm system making its way across the region.
The National Weather Service in Duluth issued a blizzard warning for Carlton and South St. Louis County until 6 p.m. Thursday as up to 20 inches of snow is expected in some areas and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour.
"It's gorgeous," said Duluth Mayor Emily Larson who joined Vineeta Sawkar during the WCCO Radio morning news on Wednesday. "I have to thank city staff really all over Minnesota who are working hard to keep people safe. It's a lot of work. People have places to go and we want people to be safe, but we also need them to stay put so we can clear the roads. I am looking out my window and I can't see very far."
Larson says the City of Duluth does have a snow emergency they can use that will likely be put in place in the near future.
"At a certain point we will activate that and we will ask people to stay put. We are able to clear snow on both sides of the street at the same time," Larson said. "Otherwise we have alternate side parking like other places and we have amnesty lots for parking if people don't have another place to go."
The latest blizzard to hit Duluth comes one day after Larson announced she would seek a third term as mayor. Larson's been Duluth's mayor since 2015 and so far is the only candidate to announce for the November election.
"I'm really grounded in the work we've been doing including the streets plan, reframing tourism, the downtown taskforce, and our direct investment of $36 million in housing. The many things that are underway and the next term is about seeing those things gel and cement in a way that can't be undone. That we are formally transitioning out of this old Duluth and into a new Duluth."
Larson was previously elected to the Duluth city council in 2011.
