The Brooklyn Park mayoral race is headed for a recount after just one vote separated Brooklyn Park city council member Lisa Jacobson and Hollies Winston on Tuesday.
According to the voting results, Jacobson finished with 3,415 votes compared to Winston with 3,414 votes.
Jacobson told WCCO Radio's Paul Douglas on Wednesday morning that she is confident the results will stand.
"I am confident that I will prevail," said Jacobson. "I've had so many people claiming that one vote already. It's exciting for that 97-year-old woman from Kenya who claims that one vote or the young girl who walked to the polls to cast a vote for the very first time in here life."
Candidates were vying for the open spot after Mayor Jeff Lunde was elected to the Hennepin County Board in November. Jacobson believes her consistent presence in the community was enough to push her to the win.
"I've worked with all the people of our community," Jacobson said. "We are a very diverse city. I've worked closes with the Liberian community over the years and I think in this case, people came out who do appreciate that long-term commitment."
The margin of victory prompted the automatic recount. The winner will be sworn-in Monday.
