A Prince sing-along is coming to downtown Minneapolis in June as part of a Prince Celebration Block Party.
“In Minneapolis, we don’t just remember Prince - we feel him in the streets, in the music, in who we are,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. “So, this June, we’re turning downtown into a citywide choir, a full-on celebration, and yes, a dance party too. Whether you can hit every note or just love his songs, this sing-along is about honoring a legacy that still brings this city together every day. Trust me - you’re going to want to be part of this.”
The Prince sing-along at the celebration block party takes place June 6.
"We're going for a record 10,000 to 15,000 people outside singing Prince songs in unison," announced Frey. "Raspberry berets coming down the pipe."
A Minneapolis-based mass choir of 100 vocalists will accompany acclaimed musical director Sanford Moore.
Prince's former attorney, manager, and friend Londell McMillan spoke at Thursday's event.
"He will be the artist that we will sing his songs, we will sing his songs from the beginning of his career all the way through the end of his career," McMillan explains. We will celebrate him because I know Prince. He would have celebrated you."
The celebrations takes place just one day before what would have been his 68th birthday.
"Although Princes in the physical is passed, he lives. Prince lives today," says McMillan. "He remains with us. You hear it, everywhere you go."
Next Tuesday marks 10 years since Prince's death.
The sing-along is expected to take place near his 110-foot tall mural in downtown Minneapolis on 1st Avenue, just down the block from the music club he helped make famous.
"But we're gonna sing his songs and we're gonna sing them loudly on June 6th," McMillan added.
