A juror in the Derek Chauvin murder and manslaughter trial is defending his presence at a Washington D-C rally where George Floyd's family spoke.
A photo on social media shows Brandon Mitchell at the Aug. 28 commemoration of Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington.
"Being a part of that, and being able to attend, you know, the same location where Martin Luther King gave his speech was a historic moment," Mitchell told WCCO's Mike Max.
"Either way, I was going to DC for this event, even if George Floyd was still alive," he said, adding that the rally had nothing to do with what happened last year at 38th and Chicago in south Minneapolis.
"Not even close," he said.
Mitchell says his statements were honest during jury selection leading up to the trial, answering once that he never attended a protest against police brutality.
Chauvin was convicted last month, and some legal experts say Chauvin's defense could cite Mitchell's attendance at last year's event in Washington as basis for an appeal.
