
A man charged with criminal vehicular homicide in connection to a June crash that killed five women in Minneapolis is reportedly negotiating a plea deal with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
Derrick Thompson, a convicted felon, faces faces five counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the deaths of the friends aged 17 to 20. Thompson's accused of driving a rented vehicle 100 miles per hour Interstate 35W.
He allegedly passed a state trooper, ran a red light, and then smashed into the victims' car while exiting onto Lake Street 95 miles per hour.
The victims were Sabiriin Ali, 17; Sahra Gesaade, 20; Salma Abdikadir, 20; Sagal Hersi, 19; and Siham Adam, 19.
Thompson, the son of former Minnesota State Representative John Thompson, faces additional charges in federal court for having fentanyl and a loaded gun inside the vehicle.
Tyler Bliss, the attorney for Derrick Thompson, said Monday they are negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 21.
