The Dinkytown McDonald's known as "Drunk Don's" for decades is back and in a new digital way

"I wouldn't say this is the perfect fit for every location but for the University of Minnesota it's perfect"

McDonald's is coming back to Dinkytown after a three-year hiatus.

The original Golden Arches, known by a few generations of students as "Drunk Don's", opened in 1963 but was torn down to make room for a new apartment building.

Now, the bottom floor of that structure will house the new business, which unlike the previous one, will not have a drive-thru and will be fully digital. And for the moment, it'll only be open until 11:00 p.m. on weekends, 10:00 p.m. during the week.

Melissa Kennedy owns the new franchise and kids are embracing the new way of ordering food.

"I would say students are coming in with their orders already done, on the app," says Kennedy. "They're basically just picking it up."

She says going digital was a strategic move.

"I wouldn't say this is the perfect fit for every city, every location," Kennedy told WCCO. "For the University of Minnesota? It's perfect."

The franchise owner says they've applied for a late license in hopes of staying open longer to cater to those that may need a late night snack.
