Another milestone will be completed tomorrow in preparations for the Minnesota State Fair, as the DNR is trucking in several hundred fish from nearly thirty species and placing them in their fish pond on the fairgrounds.

The fish aren’t not coming far, as the fish hatchery in St. Paul is responsible for supplying the underwater creatures.

Fish Hatchery manager Genevieve Furtner says there’s a reason some of the fish seem familiar to fairgoers.

About “75%” of the fish have been a part of the state fair display in the past, she said.

Not all the fish will be taken to the pond, as the DNR will also fill the tanks located inside its building on the fairgrounds.

Furtner also shared that they don’t just back the trucks up to the pond and dump out the fish.

Crews will be using six fish transport trucks and two trailers to bring in the fish, and it takes several workers to snare the fish in nets and then put them in the pond. Furtner says, “It’s like a conveyor belt of fish handling.”
