A bizarre accident on Interstate 35 north of the Twin Cities.

It happened near Harris where the Chisago County Sheriff's Office says a driver was hit by a stray bullet that went through his car door and hit him in the leg.

After an extensive search by multiple deputies, officers and drones, authorities discovered it came from more than 1,500 feet away where three men were target shooting. Deputies arriving in the vicinity had already reported hearing gunfire consistent with rifle target shooting as well.

The 48-year old Duluth man who was hit was transported to Regions Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Three others in the car were not injured.

The three men who were target shooting are said to be cooprating with law enforcement.

The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
