Authorities are investigating after a driver was shot and killed Tuesday night on Highway 169 in Plymouth.
According to police, the shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 169, just south of the Rockford Road intersection. Two cars were side-by-side when a suspect in one of the vehicles opened fire and shot the driver of the other vehicle.
The victim's car left the roadway and then crashed into cars parked in an apartment parking lot.
The wounded driver later died at the hospital and the suspect fled the scene.
Michael Reed, Plymouth Police Captain, told WCCO Radio's John Hines on Wednesday morning that it appears the shooting was a result of road rage.
"It was very surprising to our victim of this type of violence that occurred due to a possible road rage incident," said Reed.
Police are looking for the suspect's car, which was caught on video. The vehicle is believed to be a light-colored SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban. The vehicle is said to have damage on the driver’s side rear bumper.
The shooting is under investigation and police ask anyone with information to call 763-509-5178.
When it comes to road rage, Reed said that incidents like this are often unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
"You just don't know what the other person's intent is," he said. "Moving forward, if someone happens to cut you off while traveling, maybe you want to think twice about reciprocating."
