Duluth bans recreational marijuana use in public spaces

Duluth becomes the latest, and largest, city in Minnesota to ban marijuana use in public parks, near medical facilities, or near public transportation.

The City Council voted on Monday night to ban the use of recreational marijuana in an eight to one vote.

The city will issue $25 fines for first time offenders, $50 for second time offenders, and $75 for the third offence.

The smoking ban includes also includes cannabis ingestion in the form of vaping, edibles, e-cigarettes, and tobacco.

Marijuana use for recreational purposes became legal on August 1 in Minnesota. The bill, passed during the last legislative session, does not specify where you can, or can’t, use marijuana leaving that decision up to individual municipalities.

Lakeville has already banned the use of marijuana in city parks city parks, city-owned land, and on public sidewalks. Other cities such as Apple Valley, Alexandria and West St. Paul and considering similar ordinances.

The Minnesota Indoor Clean Air Act already bans smoking and tobacco use, which also would cover marijuana products. The Minnesota State Fair has already announced they will not allow marijuana use on the fairgrounds.
