MnPass is out and E-Z Pass is in for travelers on Minnesota's interstate highways.

MnDOT is making the switch, which means drivers will need just one device to pay fees and tolls in Minnesota and 18 other states.

"One of the biggest things in our research is that there are a number of people in Minnesota who hold not only a MnPass, but they would hold an E-Z Pass or I-Pass from Illinois," state transportation commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher. "Seeing that overlap told us that's probably the best direction to move."

MnPass has been in use on High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes since 2015, and officials say the switch will make it easier on motorists.

The E-Z Pass switch goes into effect August 2nd, and the state could opt-out after a year.

E-Z Pass is based in Delaware, and MnDOT will pay the company $20,000 per year to link up to the service.

According to MnDOT, there are now about 40,000 MnPass account holders and that many have expressed an interest for the state to join the E-Z pass system to make it easier to travel in other states.

Here are the states that are now connected to the E-Z Pass system:

·        Delaware

·         Illinois

·         Indiana

·         Kentucky

·         Maine

·         Maryland

·         Massachusetts

·         New Hampshire

·         New Jersey
