Early morning burst of snow kept crews busy in the metro

Crews in downtown Minneapolis were up well before the crack of dawn on Sunday, using large, rolling brushes to clear the sidewalks following the all-day snowfall that blanked most of the state.

That's because the snow kept falling after midnight north of the metro.

"Roughly in between the 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. hours, that may have produced a half-inch an hour rate." said National Weather Service Joe Calderone about the snow burst that stretched north to south over the I-35 split.

The northern suburbs got at least two inches and as much as four inches.... the south metro got more, with reports of four to six-and-a-half inches.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, there were 278 car crashes on Saturday where the vehicles were damaged.

They are also reporting 238 vehicle spinning off roadways statewide.

There were also flight delays and cancellations at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport because of the wintry weather.

And with the snow gone, in comes cold Canadian air that'll drop tempertures to frigid levels through much of the week.

"It's going to keep that really frigid air in place," said Calderone. "Temperatures really start to drop off by the time we get to Thursday, highs are only going to be, for much of Minnesota, only in the low-to-mid-teens.

It's possible by the end of the week that we'll get temperatures plunging below zero in Minnesota for the first time this cold weather season.
