The big snowstorm in New York City and along much of the East Coast is causing its share of flight cancellations and delays, even here in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
"So airlines are certainly going to have to play catch-up over the next several days for the impact of their operations that are occurring now on the East Coast," says Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Jeff Lea.
He says of the roughly 70 cancellations in or out of MSP Monday, 50 involved New York City airports.
As for the cartel violence situation in Mexico, Lea says a handful of Delta and Sun Country flights have been cancelled over the past few days.
"Certainly over the next couple of days, just because we don't have a storm here all that's happening there on the East Coast could impact the flights and departures here as we're seeing now," Lea adds.
Lea says the best thing travelers can do is stay in touch with their airline when it comes to both the weather and what is happening in Mexico.
Flights are being cancelled from the Twin Cities to Puerto Vallarta, where violence erupted following the killing of El Mencho, leader of the largest Cartel in Mexico.
"This is big and concerning news, and I think a lot of people are understandably on edge," says Kyle Potter of Thrifty Travel. "Not just people, of course, who are currently stranded in the Puerto Vallarta area, but you know really anyone with travel plans coming up anywhere in Mexico."
Delta Air Lines canceled two flights from the Twin Cities Monday, and two flights that took off for the Mexican city returned to the Twin Cities.
"I think maybe most concerningly, the State Department came out and said yesterday, recommending a shelter-in-place order, not just for Puerto Vallarta, but Guadalajara and that surrounding area in northwestern Mexico."
Potter says if you have plans to to the area, you should check with your airline as many are allowing people to change their destination.
Travel experts have added it could take days for airlines to catch-up on cancelled and delayed flights, so anyone flying later this week should keep an eye on their flight status.
