Dozens of Minneapolis elementary students will try their hand at gymnastics on Tuesday.
Kids from Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary School in North Minneapolis, and the North Side Achievement Zone will be taking a field trip to Bloomington for an all day camp at the Rebels Gymnastics Club.
"They can rotate through and take their turn on the beam on the bars on the floor," says Minnesota Sports and Events CEO Wendy Blackshaw.
Blackshaw says that it's a resource these kids don't normally get.
"There'll be acrobatic performances from Circus Juventus, there'll be an opportunity for the kids to work with the U of M women's gymnastics team, there'll be dance clinics," she said.
She says the camp is part of the U.S Olympic Trials and is designed to leave a positive and lasting impact on the community.
"We're so excited that we're giving them this opportunity to not just go and work on the equipment, but also to kind of learn a few things and be trained by the U of M gymnasts and all the coaches that we have there," Blackshaw explains.
The day camp will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Rebels Gymnastics Club (RGC) in Bloomington.
It's all part of the leadup to the 2024 U.S Gymnastics Trials at Target Center which is now about two weeks away and a prelude to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Tickets to that are still available here.
One of Minnesota's own, St. Paul's Suni Lee, will be one of the main competitors attempting to return to the Olympics at the Trials. Lee is the reigning 2020 Olympic all-around champion and uneven bars bronze medalist.
