And just like that, all remaining Minnesota State Fair memorial benches are gone.
It only took about 48 hours for people to snatch up the remaining inventory after officials announced earlier this week that the bench program was ending.
Executive Director of the Minnesota State Fair Foundation Mary Chung says ending the program was an emotional decision, but they have simply run out of room.
"If people were really sad that this program went away, we're always looking for other ways of having recognition opportunities on the fairgrounds, and we're hoping another one comes along real soon," says Chung.
There was a flood of interest as soon as the Fair announced earlier this week that the bench program was ending.
"It was really heartbreaking actually, because we really know how much people love this program and how meaningful it is," explained Chung. "But really, if you look around the fairgrounds when you're there you can see all the benches and tables, and just really know there aren't many more places for them to go."
Chung says funds from the bench sales over the past 15 years have gone toward many projects on the Fairgrounds, like sidewalk reconstruction, building restoration, and scholarships for kids involved in the Fair.
