Excessive heat warning for Tuesday in the Twin Cities

It'll feel like triple digits, but only for one day

Sizzling temperatures on the way for Tuesday

Remember last winter when you were wishing for a return of the hot weather?

Welp... here it comes.

An excessive heat warning is out for tomorrow in the Twin Cities, when a warm front now making its way into the region brings temperatures into the upper 90's.

With the dew point predicted to be in the 60's, the National Weather Service says tomorrow's heat index will soar into triple digits.

"It looks pretty miserable on Tuesday," said forecaster Caleb Grunzke.

We'll start feeling the difference Monday night, when temperatures will get no lower than the 70's after dark.

"For the Twin Cities, we have a forecasted high of 98, and with upper 60's dewpoints, that puts us around 103 for a heat index," Grunzke said. "And the heat index stays above one-hundred for most of Tuesday afternoon."

This is happening because the warm front crawling into the region will be pushed out by a cold front in short order, with the cooler temperatures expected to bring rain on Wednesday.

"You need a really strong system to do this," said Grunzke. "It's kind of unusual that we just get one day of it, and it's gone."

Gone, but not for good.

"Looking ahead towards next week, it might return again," he said.

The temperature swing is about 15 degrees between the height of the heat wave on Tuesday and the cooling off period less than 24 hours later.
