Hundreds gathered at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis to celebrate the life of a legendary Twin Cities journalist, Jim Klobuchar. The 93-year-old died May 12, 2021, but his memorial service was delayed because of COVID. In addition to a stint in the army, and his journalism career, he was also the father of Senator Amy Klobuchar.
"So many columns mailed to me in the U.S Senate," Klobuchar said. "[They'd be] yellowed and folded, tacked up on people's refrigerators for years. There would be notes accompanying them, 'your dad helped my aunt get her job back' or 'this column is about me when I got married,' even 'this story meant a lot to my grandpa when he died.'"
Jim Klobuchar grew up in the Iron Range, the son of a miner, and became a journalist for the Star Tribune. When he retired, he had written over 8,400 columns.
"There were many mountains to climb northern Minnesota," said his daughter.
"The uncertainty of work, the drinking, the closing and openings of the mine. But what was amazing about my dad, is he never truly left that world behind. He wrote, as fellow journalist Dave Nemer once said, about 'people on the outside.'"
Jim Klobuchar had Alzheimer's disease and died at a care facility in Burnsville.
