One of the FBI’s most wanted fraud fugitives has surrender after his overseas flight landed in Minneapolis.
Said Abdullahi Ereg faces charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering for allegedly stealing more than $4.2 million from a federal child nutrition program.
Ereg reportedly initiating his return just one day after being publicly listed by Vice President JD Vance. He peacefully surrendered in Minneapolis Wednesday after flying back from Kenya, according to federal prosecutors.
"I think it's a wise thing for them to surrender themselves, and I think anybody who's a fugitive justice ought to do the same thing. The longer they stay a fugitive, the more likely they are to pay a consequence for that," says United States Attorney for Minnesota Daniel Rosen.
Federal agencies say they will continue their investigation into the massive pandemic-era relief scheme that they say they expect will bring in even more arrests.
More than 70 people have been charged in the $250 million scheme.
Ereg is expected to make his initial court appearance as early as Thursday morning.
