There are reports that federal prosecutors want former Republican Minnesota State Senator Justin Eichorn (Grand Rapids) to remain in jail before his trial for soliciting sex from a minor.
Eichorn was arrested one week ago and resigned from the State Senate on Thursday.
According to a motion filed over the weekend, federal prosecutors say Eichorn lied about possessing a gun, while accusing him of trying to get help removing a laptop from his St. Paul apartment.
Prosecutors also say they found another cellphone that appears to have been wiped.
Eichorn remains in the Sherburne County Jail in Elk River until space opens in a halfway house. Governor Walz is expected to announce plans tomorrow for a special election to fill the seat vacated by Justin Eichorn.
Among those already throwing their hat into the ring for that seat is former GOP state chair and current Nisswa Mayor Jennifer Carnahan, who announced Monday morning her intention to run for the open seat following Eichorn's resignation.
Carnahan herself was forced to resign as state party chair after her close connections to prominent GOP fundraiser Tony Lazarro who was found guilty of federal child sex trafficking.
Lazarro and is now behind bars.
