As the storm of the decade begins in Minnesota, firefighters are warning Minnesotans to take extra caution, as they may not be able to respond as quickly in the case of a fire.
State Fire Marshall Jim Smith spoke during a press conference before the storm on Tuesday, sharing that everyone needs to do their part to prevent a fire.
This includes being extra careful if you’re smoking inside or using candles, as a house fire will be extremely dangerous during the height of the storm.
Another request Smith had, and possibly the most important, was for Minnesotans to ensure they’re using space heaters as directed.
“Where we run into problems is when people bring combustibles too close to that space heater or if they leave the room for extended periods of time with that space heater on,” Smith said.
When the storm ends, Smith is asking folks to clear fire hydrants on their property in order to have them ready in case of an emergency.
